  1. Holland College recognizes the importance of scholarly research as fundamental to the pursuit of knowledge, truth and objectivity as well as enhancing quality of life and socio-economic opportunities of all Canadians. Honesty, integrity and high ethical standards are essential to the process of scientific investigation and innovation. Instances of misconduct in research may present a threat to public confidence in the college. The integrity of institutions hosting such research and of the individuals responsible for the stewardship of funds may be at risk as well. Exercising due diligence, awareness and responsibility is therefore paramount to the pursuit of scientific investigations. Equally important is the establishment of safeguards against intentional or accidental misconducts in research. To this end the College will adopt and follow the Tri-Agency Framework for Responsible Conduct of Research and the Tri-Council Policy Statement TCPS2: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

  2. Holland College is committed to research and development activities that will support economic development in the Atlantic Region, and enhance the quality of our programs and the professional development of our college personnel and students. Research activities at the college are diverse and include applied research, research into teaching and learning, labour market research and institutional research designed to improve the programs and services of the college. Student research will only be conducted under the supervision of a qualified staff research supervisor.

  3. Research is defined by the Canada Foundation for Innovation as the ‘attempt to discover new facts, knowledge, and information, to develop new interpretations of facts, knowledge or information, or to discover new means of applying existing knowledge’.

  4. Applied Research seeks to utilize, synthesize or apply existing knowledge, information or resources to solve practical problems or to develop innovative products, processes or technologies.

  5. Innovation may be defined as the application of new ideas to enhance the quality and value of products, processes and services.

  6. All research conducted by Holland College that involves human participants shall comply with the standards established by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, known as the Tri-Council, and stipulated in its policy statement -TCPS2 -on the Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

  7. The President shall establish such regulations and procedures necessary to cover research activities at the College.
