Police Science (Cadet)

The Police Science (Cadet) program is an accelerated diploma blending academic and tactical law enforcement training. Students practice on a driving course and gun range, learn use of force and control skills, develop criminal investigation techniques, and receive communications and mental health training. Academic components include sociology, psychology, and law. The program begins with distance education, then transitions to in-person training at the Atlantic Police Academy residence, where cadets live for the duration of the program except during on-the-job training placements.

Prerequisites

Section titled “Prerequisites”
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent resident status
  • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
  • Must be 19 years of age by program start date
  • Completion of an APA Medical Assessment Form
  • Successful completion of Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation Test (PARE)
  • Completion of Vision Examination form
  • Valid Class 5 (cars and light trucks) unrestricted driver’s license
  • Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector) with no findings of guilt
  • Copy of Credit Record Check (Through Equifax)
  • Successful completion of a full background check
  • Completion of Immunization Verification Form (required after acceptance)
  • Three letters of reference, not from family members
  • Successful completion of the Police Officer Selection Test (POST) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory
  • Successful completion of polygraph interview
  • Certification in Standard First Aid, CPR Level C and AED (must be valid for duration of program, must be taken in person)
  • Résumé including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates
  • Drivers Abstract within the last year with no moving violations
  • Completion of APA Police Science (Cadet) Additional Information Form
